IT के लिए University Degree Program चुनना

अपने पिछले article में मैंने university program की व्यापक चिंताओं और approaches और यह IT में हम पर कैसे लागू होती है, इसका अध्ययन किया। अब हम individual programs और university system में major और focus area के चुनाव के approach पर विचार करेंगे।

हमें इस बड़े सवाल को भी address करना होगा कि "क्या software engineering और programming IT का हिस्सा है?" Proper IT programs के नाम Information Technology, Computer Information Systems या Management Information Systems जैसे होने चाहिए। IT और CIS programs अक्सर interchangeable होते हैं। MIS programs IT के subset हैं जो IT के कुछ management-supporting aspects पर अधिक focused होते हैं।

IT hopefuls के लिए सबसे insidious और dangerous programs वे हैं जिनके नाम सबसे नजदीक हैं लेकिन IT field से सबसे कम जुड़े हैं: computer engineering और computer science। इन दोनों को कभी भी IT में career तलाशने वालों से नहीं मिलना चाहिए।

Computer engineering IT से पुराना है और electrical engineering का एक subset है। यह एक traditional engineering field है जो computers और computer components (जैसे processors, chips, boards, peripherals) के design पर focused है और किसी भी तरह से IT या किसी भी IT-related discipline के साथ practically कोई crossover नहीं है। Computer engineering और IT लगभग कभी भी university के भीतर एक ही school या college में भी नहीं दिखने चाहिए।

अगर software engineering (जो खुद कोई IT discipline नहीं है लेकिन कम से कम closely related है) traditional product development engineering की दुनिया का programming world का analogue है तो computer science physics या mathematics का programming world का analogue है। Computer science वास्तव में एक "science and math" type field है, जो उन theories और foundations को develop करती है जिनका उपयोग software engineering discipline products बनाने के लिए करती है जिन्हें अक्सर IT discipline द्वारा उपयोग और manage किया जाता है। Computer Science, CS, संभवतः वह सबसे commonly mistaken field है जिसमें IT hopefuls enter होंगे और अगर यह एक true CS program है तो यह completely inappropriate और time की बर्बादी है। यह वह program है जिसे सबसे अधिक watch out करना है। CS से पूरी तरह बचें और किसी भी ऐसी university से बचें जो IT programs को CS के रूप में पास करने की कोशिश करे, दोनों कभी overlap नहीं करते।
