University Experience को कैसे Approach करें

University बनाम non-university की सभी चर्चाओं को एक तरफ रखते हुए, एक बार university (या college जैसा Americans इसे आमतौर पर कहते हैं) चुन लिया जाए, तो अगला कदम एक degree program चुनना है जो हमारे chosen profession की जरूरतों को पूरा करे। यह, बेशक, इस presumption पर based है कि हमारा chosen profession IT होगा। अगर आप IT में career में interested नहीं हैं, तो यह article शायद आपके लिए नहीं है।

University programs समस्याग्रस्त हो सकते हैं, विशेष रूप से IT में, क्योंकि वे अक्सर mislabeled होते हैं, students अक्सर अपनी studies शुरू करने से पहले यह नहीं जानते कि वे किस area of study में interested हैं और जो लोग students को university की तरफ push करते हैं वे अक्सर IT में अनुभवहीन होते हैं और specific programs और field के बीच relationship को नहीं समझते। इसलिए जो लोग IT में career के intention के साथ students को university studies की ओर direct करते हैं वे बहुत अक्सर उन्हें ऐसे university programs में pressure डालते हैं जो IT careers के लिए बिल्कुल unsuited होते हैं।

पहले, universities कहाँ shine करती हैं? इसके कारण, साथ ही ऊपर mentioned university values के कारण, specific technical skills पर focusing university timeframe के दौरान almost wholly एक waste होगी। हमारे लिए dramatically अधिक valuable soft skills और अधिक broad skills हैं जैसे एक great world view develop करना, business और accounting practices और concerns को समझना, psychology और sociology सीखना, अच्छे management practices का अध्ययन, communications और, शायद सबसे ऊपर, written और oral business communications दोनों में well versed बनना। IT professionals hire करने वाली companies इन skills की कमी के बारे में शिकायत करती हैं, technical competence की कमी के बारे में नहीं, विशेष रूप से छोटे businesses में जहाँ लगभग सभी IT practitioners को end users और अक्सर management के साथ भी effectively communicate करने की बड़ी जरूरत होती है। अन्य job roles और businesses के overall workings की broad understanding IT practitioners के लिए भी बहुत valuable है। IT केवल एक business context में exist करती है, उस context की जितनी firm grasp होगी, IT में किसी के पास उतना अधिक value provide करने की potential होगी।

अधिकांश भाग के लिए, हम अपने university experience से जो चाहते हैं वह वास्तव में उससे align होता है जो universities best provide करने के लिए तैयार हैं। हमारे लिए, अपने जीवन भर, सबसे कम useful होगा highly specific technical skills जो हमारे careers में बहुत जल्दी (या शुरू होने से पहले भी) overly focused हों और ऐसी skills जो अक्सर university छोड़ने से पहले ही rapidly outdated हो जाएंगी।

तो यह हमें कहाँ छोड़ता है? पहले हमें broadest degree options को देखना चाहिए। चाहे हम Associates (दो वर्ष) degrees या Bachelor (चार वर्ष) degrees को देखना शुरू करें, हमारे पास generally एक "of Arts" या एक "of Science" option का choice होता है और कुछ rare cases में एक "of Professional Studies" option। इनमें से प्रत्येक एक sliding scale पर एक point है जहाँ Arts degree सबसे liberal है और selected area of study पर सबसे कम focused है। Science degree Arts degree की तुलना में अधिक focused और कम liberal है। और rare Professional Studies option Science degree की तुलना में और भी अधिक focused है जिसमें बहुत कम liberal studies हैं, basically Arts degree के polar opposite।

इन degree options में से, मैं लगभग universally Arts approach recommend करता हूँ। Specific skills पर heavy focus किसी भी degree field के लिए university का generally poor approach है लेकिन IT में यह किसी भी अन्य की तुलना में अधिक dramatic है। Classes और coursework जो heavily specific हैं वे generally एक single area पर overly focused होने से education useful नहीं होती। Science approach एक reasonable option है, लेकिन मैं इससे lean away करूंगा। Professional Studies approach एक trade school program की नकल करने का स्पष्ट attempt है और इससे बचा जाना चाहिए क्योंकि यह university resources का बहुत poor use है और साथ ही इतना rare है कि हर नए व्यक्ति के encounter होने पर regular explanation की जरूरत होगी।

अपनी studies के साथ highly liberal रहना university experience से सर्वोत्तम overall benefit प्रदान करता है। न केवल यह हमें university जो offer करती है उसे best leverage करने देता है बल्कि यह हमारे careers के लिए सबसे अच्छी foundation भी देता है। एक hidden benefit भी है, और वह है career risk mitigation।

यहाँ career risk mitigation का अर्थ है हमारी university training का overly specific न होना ताकि यदि हम बाद में decide करें कि IT वह field नहीं है जिसे हम pursue करना चाहते हैं या कुछ समय बाद यह वह career नहीं है जिसमें हम remain करना चाहते हैं तो हमारी education उस flexibility को effective तरीके से support करे। शायद हमारे IT careers हमें management या entrepreneurship में lead करेंगे। या शायद हमारा IT experience एक ऐसे field में होगा जिसे हम IT से अधिक enjoy करते हैं। या हम ऐसी जगह रह सकते हैं जहाँ हमारे IT opportunities कम हैं और अन्य opportunities exist करती हैं। ऐसे अनेक कारण हैं कि broad, flexible education न केवल हमारे IT careers के लिए बल्कि हमारे non-IT careers के लिए भी सबसे अच्छी क्यों है।

University कैसे काम करती है इसके बारे में सोचना और इसके core goals को समझना और वे हम पर कैसे apply होते हैं, यह optimum value के लिए university experience को leverage करने के लिए तैयार होने का पहला कदम है।
