I was talking to someone in HR today about their technology budget and realized she was not getting what I was saying. I had to break it down into more manageable pieces for her.

This is common for me too. A lot of these people are management so you would think they already have these skills since they do not have technical skills. I am certainly not a great communicator either but I realize it and am trying to work on it.

I would agree with the school portion too. I was computer science/physics major and the English classes I took were far too easy. They did not push me at all. In fact I doubt the professors cared. It seemed they were just there to complain about their life to students and get people to agree with them.

Anyway nice post. I should really take an updated technical writing course or something similar. A little more education would never hurt.
