RAID-5 is dead, or should be with all it’s problems. Big storage systems will follows, as major players such as Google or facebook demonstrated it: future is decoupled simple storage systems, where redundancy is obtained by the inherent separated physical and logical separations (power, electronics, HD/SSD, network and even locations!).

Big storage systems (as physically being on big box or rack or cluster) are things of the past, they are as Dinosaurs as the old mainframes, we may see them in Jurassic Park, we may even see things that’s called today “mainframe” or in the future “big storage”, but they will all rely on virtualizations, separating instances, being spread against different hosting locations to provide security and performance.
