With a hardware raid should your raid controller fail you will need to be able to replace it with an identical one to recover your data. With software raid, running an identical O/S (or file system, or RAID software version) is relatively easy and keeping spare copies of software inexpensive. Sourcing an identical hardware RAID controller from when the array was setup maybe several years ago can be difficult and expensive.
