Very well surmised. To avoid the significant cost increases and still reap the benefits, I implemented a software based SAN solution. It natively integrates with the Hyper-V hosts and turns the local storage into iSCSI targets on both servers in the cluster. It also mirrors the images between the servers providing redundancy within the SAN itself. Virtualizing our server environment was one of the first things I began working on when I started.

Thanks for the excellent post on virtualization and the SMB marketplace. I thought you did a good job of providing the background and IT justification for virtualization.

I thought I’d chime in with some resource links from Microsoft. They’re trying to tailor help to the SMB community and they have a couple of tools / links below that might be worth checking out for those who want further resources.

Best,

Mac OS X Server 10.6 Snow Leopard can run as a guest on Parallels Server for Mac (http://www.parallels.com/products/server/mac/sr/).

No affiliation with Parallels. On the contrary, I’m running VMware Fusion at home.

I’ve known most of this for awhile now but it’s good to see it clarified in terms of SMB since the biggest fear is “improper planning” — i.e. using the hardware I’m already comfortable with instead of splurging on SANs or blades — leading to catastrophe or just horrible ROI.

Do you have any real implementation / case study of implementing virtualization on SMB? I haven’t poke around your website yet 🙂
